The Simply Complex

Think of an e-commerce site. Think of the interactions that users have with the system. They're relatively uncomplicated. The users browse through a catalog, find products to buy, and then click a purchase button. When they've finished shopping, they proceed to the checkout and complete their orders. The steps are simple, but the backend isn't as straightforward.

When a user adds an item to her cart, where does that item go? The information must be transmitted back to the server and stored in one form or another. But how is it stored? How can you ensure that an order doesn't get mixed up with other user's orders?
