8. Security > chroot

chroot

Many web servers are run via the chroot command to provide an added measure of security by defining a certain directory as the new document root, but this has two problems. First, it is a pain because all system libraries and commands the web server may need must be in this directory. Nothing outside of this directory will be visible to a process started under chroot. Second, it is a performance hit every time your web server accesses the filesystem, because ever file access is filtered through the chroot command.
