Snooping HTTP with Sprocket

It is often instructive to watch HTTP traffic while getting a web page, so you can correlate network activity with what you see in the browser. One way to do this is with a web proxy configured to print out HTTP requests and responses as it sees them. I have such a proxy at http://patrick.net/software/sprocket/sprocket that you can download for free. You need only start it up with the -d option (for “dump”) to see everything going on at the HTTP level.

Of course this does not work with SSL connections, because snooping SSL content would be a proof that SSL does not work. You might be able to get some idea of the request an SSL browser is making by using a system call tracer like
