21. Java > Runtime Options

Runtime Options

Java has several runtime options that are worth knowing about. I discuss them in the following sections.

-verbosegc

Setting -verbosegc causes Java to give more detail about its garbage collection (GC). Setting this option multiple times actually gives even more information, up to three times: -verbosegc -verbosegc -verbosegc. This can be useful in diagnosing GC problems.

-noverify

Bytecode verification is on by default for any class loaded over a network, but not for locally loaded classes, such as those run on the server side. Verification simply confirms that the bytecode conforms to the Java specification. You can use java -verify <class> after compiling instead. It may soon be possible to turn off the bytecode verifier in browsers (it is off for applications by default). This exposes you to some security risk in return for performance.
