DOM

The Document Object Model is a representation of the tree of tags in a web page, starting with the HTML tag at the root. More than that, it is a JavaScript API for manipulating that tree in the browser. This allows all sorts of effects that were previously difficult or impossible outside of a Java applet, such as sorting columns by clicking on the header, downloading a fraction of a page, and other kinds of dynamic HTML (DHTML). Unfortunately, Netscape and Microsoft each have their own slightly incompatible versions of DOM. See http://www.mozilla.org/docs/dom/ for more information.
