Graphics

The typical web graphic is 10 KB to 20 KB, which is larger than the typical 4 KB of HTML in a page. The challenge with graphics is mostly how to make them smaller.

Weight Watching

Make images small by reducing size in number of pixels and number of colors (8-bit is usually enough) and using a format with compression appropriate to the image. If you are using 32-bit color to encode the U.S. flag, you can reduce to 8-bit color and lose no quality at all. JPEG compresses photographs better than GIF, but GIF compresses line drawings better. The new PNG format has excellent compression in both cases, but is not supported by all browsers.

Java is often criticized for its long startup time and relatively large memory footprint, but large graphics composed of simple shapes may consume less network bandwidth as simple Java
