The Document Object Model

The latest browsers give the HTML writer direct access to the objects the browser uses internally. There is a standard for these internal objects called the Document Object Model. Access to the DOM is through a JavaScript API in both Netscape 6 and IE 5. By using the DOM directly, many things that would require slow trips to the server side can now be done on the client side, such as sorting table columns by headers, or dynamically converting XML to HTML. In addition, effects are possible that were previously available only with Java, such as client-side animation and 3-D effects.
