Caching and Differences

HTTP 1.1 web servers are capable of responding with byte ranges of documents so that browsers can download only the fraction of a document that has changed. This would greatly improve performance, but unfortunately, browsers don’t take advantage of this server capability. There is a commercial product called the “Condenser” from FineGround networks that can improve speed by doing something similar. See Appendix A for more on the Condenser. Also, see http://webreference.com/internet/software/servers/http/deltaencoding/intro/ for another attempt at specifying how a browser should request a fraction of a document.
