Hierarchical Caches

Recent research on distributed caching schemes has led to two implementations of hierarchical caching: Harvest (commercial) and Squid (freeware). They both use the same Inter-Cache Protocol (ICP). Hierarchical caching provides increased perception of performance for the entire Internet, but it requires a large infrastructure to be successful. Squid is being used in an elaborate national caching scheme described at http://ircache.nlanr.net/. See also http://squid.nlanr.net/Squid/.
