How Many Connections Can My Server Handle?

It is enlightening to set up as many connections as possible to your web server, just to see what limit you hit first. Use the various system-monitoring tools described earlier while running the following script. Note that this script may crash your server or your test client machine, so use it only on machines you can afford to crash. You may need to run multiple copies from several different test machines to max out your server, in which case you’ll need to add the highest number output from each copy. I can get about 3,500 connections on my Sony Vaio laptop running Linux 2.2. It seems you can set up far more connections from a single process than the ulimit number of file descriptors configured.
