Disk Activity and PID

Disk activity is a major inhibitor of performance, but as far as I know, there is no way to find out which process is responsible for any given moment of disk activity. Perhaps it’s not possible, given that write and reads may be aggregated, or that some filesystem flushing is done by the kernel and not any particular process.
