About converting layout grids to tables

The GoLive layout grid is a valuable tool for laying out Web pages. It offers great flexibility for moving design elements around on a page and for placing elements with pixel precision. It lets you group items, align and distribute objects, and layer elements using layers. However, it does use a fixed width (which may or may not be desirable), it uses a spacer tag which may not be supported in the same way in all browsers, and it can add extra code.

Designing with HTML tables is generally more difficult than designing with a layout grid. Because you are working with rows and cells, you need to have planned your page layout ahead of time and understand exactly where every element is going to be placed on the page.

In GoLive, you can use the flexibility and convenience of the layout grid to develop your Web page, and when you have finalized your design, you can convert the layout grid to a table, stripping out the extra code and eliminating potential problems with different browsers interpreting the layout grid differently. If you need to adjust the layout at any point after you have converted the layout grid to a table, you can convert the table back to a layout grid.

For more information on converting layout grids to tables, see “Converting a layout grid to a table” in the Adobe GoLive CS Online Help.
