Exploring on your own

Hypertext Markup Language (HTML) is used to publish information on the World Wide Web. In this lesson, you worked in GoLive's Layout Editor to design a Web page. When you work in the Layout Editor, GoLive writes HTML code for your page. Sometimes you may want to work directly with your page's HTML code. GoLive provides two different views of the HTML code, which you can use to design and edit your Web pages. The Source Code Editor lets you view the HTML code directly, and the Outline Editor lets you view the HTML code in a hierarchical, organized way.

Now that you've learned how to work in Layout Editor, try working in Source Code Editor and Outline Editor to edit the Appraisal page.

First you'll open the Appraisal page.

1.
In GoLive, choose File > Open, and open the appraise.html file in Lessons/Lesson04/04End/.

2.
In the appraise.html document window, select the main heading “Putting a Price on Your Guitar.”

3.
Click the Source tab () to display the document in the Source Code Editor.

4.
Notice that the main heading is highlighted in the HTML source code. If necessary, scroll to the right in the document window, so that you can view the highlighted text.

Now you'll use the Source Code Editor to change the paragraph format of the main heading from Header 1 to Header 2.

5.
Select the text “<h1>” at the beginning of the line that contains the main heading. The text that you've selected is the start tag of an h1 element, which instructs the Web browser to display the main heading using the Header 1 format.

Now you'll change the h1 element to an h2 element by modifying its start and end tags.

6.
Type <h2> to replace the selected text.

7.
Select the text “</h1>” at the end of the line that contains the main heading. This is the end tag for the original h1 element.

8.
Type </h2> to replace the selected text.

9.
Click the Layout tab () to return the document to Layout Editor. Notice that the paragraph format for the main heading now is Header 2.

Now you'll use the Outline Editor to return the paragraph format of the main heading to Header 1.

10.
If needed, select the main heading.

11.
Click the Outline Editor tab () to display the document in the Outline Editor. Notice that the main heading has a black border around it in the outline.

12.
Click to select the text “h2” text.

13.
Type h1 to replace the selected text, and click in the blank space outside the selected text to deselect it.

You'll also use the Outline Editor to center the main heading on the page.

14.
Click the triangle to the right of the “h1” text to display a pop-up menu.

15.
Choose “align” from the pop-up menu.

16.
Click the triangle next to “align” to display another pop-up menu, and choose “center.”
