Lesson 11. Using Cascading Style Sheets > Exploring an external style sheet

Exploring an external style sheet

Style sheets can also be external to the current document. A link in the page to the external style sheet file will format the elements on the page. You'll be creating and linking an external style sheet to a page later in the lesson. Right now let's simply see what an external style sheet looks like.

1.
In the Files tab of the site window, double-click alternate1.css located in the styles folder. The style sheet opens in its own window named alternate1.css.

2.
Notice that the external style sheet lists some common HTML elements.

3.
In the alternate1.css window, select an element style.

The CSS Style Inspector on the right side of the alternate1.css window becomes active.

4.
Make sure that the Selector and Properties button () in the CSS Style Inspector is selected.

5.
Click different elements in the alternate1.css window.

6.
In the CSS editor, notice that the styles with their associated selectors, properties, and values appear just as with the internal style sheet you examined earlier.

7.
Close the alternate1.css CSS Editor window without saving it.
