Getting started

Now that you have an understanding of the tasks involved in building a Web site, you'll build a simple Web site for a fictional company called First Strike Matches. First you'll view the finished site in a Web browser.

1.
Open a Web browser (Microsoft® Internet Explorer, Netscape® Navigator or Safari, for example). From the File menu of your Web browser, open the index.html file in Lessons/Lesson01/01End/Matchbox/web-content/ on your hard drive. (The command used to open a page depends on the browser you use, but it is usually File > Open or File > Open File.)

Note

As you work through the lessons in this book, make sure that your operating system is set to display file extensions. Working without file extensions turned on will be difficult.

Some features of the Web pages you'll view require browsers that support JavaScript and Dynamic Hypertext Markup Language (DHTML). If you don't have an appropriate browser, you can use GoLive to preview some elements of the site, as described in “Previewing a Web page” on page 32.

2.
Click the links in the Web page, and explore the site. You must have QuickTime 5.0 or later loaded in order to see the video at the bottom of the Questions page (questions.html).

3.
When you have finished viewing the Web site, close your browser.
