Chapter 10. Site Administration > Assigning User Roles

Assigning User Roles

Contribute users can’t choose which user role they belong to. Rather, the site administrator assigns users to user roles. By default, Contribute supplies three user roles for each Web site: Administrator, Publisher, and Writer. Generally speaking, the Administrator role has more control over the Web site than the other roles. For example, the Administrator group, by default, has the permission to delete pages, and the Writer group does not. The Publisher role can create and publish pages. The Writer role can create and edit pages, but must send them to a Publisher for review, and doesn’t have publishing privileges. You can redefine the default permissions of each group. In this section, we explore the permissions you can assign.

Contribute assigns many permissions by default, and in many cases you may find that these defaults work well. On the other hand, if you need specific control of your site, you can set permissions to be as loose or as restrictive as you like.
