Chapter 1. Getting Started > Understanding Contribute’s Workflow

Understanding Contribute’s Workflow

In order to get the most out of using Macromedia Contribute, you need to understand how Contribute approaches the task of creating and editing Web pages. Other Web site tools, even Macromedia’s own Dreamweaver, are largely built around the concept that one person, or perhaps a team of people, has full access to a Web site, with the unfettered ability to make changes throughout the site. In contrast, Contribute presumes that one or more site administrators are responsible for managing a Web site, and one or more groups of users are able to add content to the site but have little or no need to deal with the site’s design or its HTML or other code. For these content contributors, Contribute makes adding information to a Web site as easy as using a word processor such as Microsoft Word, but in part accomplishes this ease of use by limiting the ability of contributors to make design changes to the site.

Contribute 3 adds to this basic workflow with a new model where the different people in the publishing process are assigned roles, which are the abilities a content contributor is allowed. The Web site administrator assigns roles to all of the site’s users. For example, people assigned the role of “Writer” may be able to add content to the site, but may not be able to publish that content. Instead, they must submit their work to a co-worker in the “Editor” role, who makes her own changes and then publishes the new content. If needed by your organization, the administrator can set up several levels of approval before a page can be made live on the Web site. You’ll learn more about user roles and the approval process in Chapter 3.
