Chapter 4. Editing Page Content > Editing Web Pages in an External Application

Editing Web Pages in an External Application

Another new feature in Contribute 3 is the ability to use a different application to edit a draft page. This is yet another capability that the Web site administrator can turn on or off for a given user role.

Editing a draft page in an external application allows you to do something that Contribute users have hitherto been unable to accomplish: get at and modify the HTML source code underlying the Web page. Greater power needs greater expertise, so site administrators will probably enable external source editing only for more advanced users. If you’re a site administrator, see Chapter 10, “Site Administration” for more information on how to enable external source editing for your users.

To edit a draft page in an external application:

1.
With a draft page active, choose File > Actions > Edit Page Source in External Application, or press Ctrl-Shift-E (Cmd-Shift-E).

Contribute launches the Web Page Source program that is listed in the File Editors section of Preferences, opens the draft page in that application, and displays the Editing Draft in Another Application placeholder page (Figure 4.30).

Figure 4.30. This placeholder page appears when you edit a draft page’s source code in an external application.

2.
Switch to the external editing application, and make the changes to the page that you want.

3.
In the external editing application, save the changes and close the document.

4.
Switch back to Contribute.

5.
If you want to continue to edit the page, click the Edit with Contribute link on the Editing Draft in Another Application page.
