Chapter 11. Customizing Contribute

Chapter 11. Customizing Contribute

Macromedia Contribute does a fine job straight out of the box, but like many of the Macromedia programs, it can be customized and extended. For example, you can add your own Starter Pages, which contributors can use from the New Page dialog. You can customize the Contribute Welcome screen with your organization’s logo. You can modify and rearrange the Contribute menus so that they are more to your liking, and you can add or change the commands on the menus. Similarly, you can customize the Contribute toolbars. And if you have special instructions or tutorials for your users, you can add topics to the Contribute How Do I panel.

Fair warning—geeky stuff ahead: Unlike the operations covered in the rest of this book, customizing Contribute often means working with a text editor; and for most tasks, you need some knowledge of HTML, JavaScript, and XML, and that means getting your hands dirty with some code. On the other hand, some quite useful ways of customizing Contribute require little or no coding, and I’ll show you those, too.
