Lesson 14. Dynamic, Data-Driven Sites > Planning the Web Application

Planning the Web Application

As always, but especially as you develop increasingly complex sites and architectures, it is essential that you have a clear vision of what you are setting out to do. Because Lesson 14 inaugurates a whole section on ColdFusion, let's begin with the big picture.

In the real world, you'll start with a scenario—that is, your current situation and a problem that needs solving. Imagine that students are working on a unit on Dante. The unit needs to provide some content, so you created the interactive map. Also, the application would probably be more useful if students had a quick and easy way to learn who their classmates are—and more useful still if they could easily contact them. You'll create a page that outputs each of the students in the class, and hyperlinks their email addresses—all generated from the database. Finally, students usually want some way to determine how well they are doing, so you'll create an ungraded quiz that they can use to test their knowledge.
