Part: 2 Dreamweaver PROJECT 1 > Preparing a New Site

Lesson 4. Preparing a New Site

Macromedia Dreamweaver MX 2004 is an HTML editor that enables users to create Web pages and work with images or multimedia assets in a visual and/or code environment. In addition to the page development capabilities, Dreamweaver also provides tools to manage and maintain Web sites.

One of the greatest challenges of authoring content in HTML, where files, graphics, and other assets can quickly grow into the hundreds or thousands, is file management. Even a minor organizational slipup can cause your pages to go awry, with missing images and broken links, and can result in a lot of wasted time hunting around for files and fixing bad code. Dreamweaver comes with a powerful site manager designed to help you keep your site organization sound.

Dreamweaver MX 2004 is also natively able to work with assets developed in Fireworks. The Fireworks HTML you exported in Lesson 3, “Exporting a Site Design,” for example, can be imported to a Dreamweaver document with just a click of a button.

Through the Extension Manager, you can improve Macromedia Studio MX 2004 products to enhance their capabilities.

In this lesson, you will set up a site in accordance with the eventual site plan and your authoring preferences. Once the site is set up, you will create a generic page that you can use as a template in Lesson 5, “Developing a Page Template,” for all of your subsequent pages. In the process, you will learn the basics of page production in Dreamweaver MX 2004 and become familiar with its interface and tools. In addition, you will also work with the Extension Manager, downloading, installing, and using a Dreamweaver extension. Extensions are additional features, developed by Macromedia or third-party developers, which you can install to add additional functionality to Dreamweaver.

In this lesson, you will:

  • Define a static site in Dreamweaver

  • Open a new HTML page

  • Import Fireworks HTML into Dreamweaver

  • Search for Dreamweaver Extensions

  • Work with Extension Manager

  • Insert placeholder text

  • Reconstruct the original interface design

  • Insert images

  • Make images accessible

This lesson takes approximately 60 minutes to complete.
