Lesson 11. Preparing the Dante Site

This lesson marks a significant turning point in the book. Up till now, you've worked on the Jade Valley site, learning how to integrate Macromedia Fireworks, Macromedia Dreamweaver, and Macromedia Flash to create a visually appealing static Web site. In the second half of the book, you will learn how to create sites that do something. You'll create Flash movies with sophisticated interactive interfaces. You'll harness the power of Macromedia ColdFusion to enable Web pages to interact with databases, showing live data on the fly, and capture data your users enter into forms and save the data to a database. In Lessons 16, “A Component-Based Flash Quiz,” and Lesson 17, “Flash, ColdFusion, and the Database,” you'll put it all together, by creating a Flash-based quiz, whose data is sent to a database.

In this lesson you'll set up the Dante site and put together the homepage.

The project you will complete is for a fictional class on the medieval poet, Dante. You will create an interactive map of his Inferno, that is, his description of the peoples and places of Hell. Users will be able to click different elements in the map to learn more, and they will even be able to play a drag-and-drop monsters game. You'll also create a page that shows basic information about all the students in the class.

In this lesson, you will set the project in motion, by defining the new site in Dreamweaver and using a template, which we've provided, to create all of the pages that will be in the eventual site. You'll populate those pages with real content over the remainder of the book. Right now, you are just preparing the site for what's to come.

In this lesson, you will:

  • Define the new Dante site

  • Create several placeholder pages based on a Dreamweaver template

  • Format text and insert an image to create the site homepage

  • Familiarize yourself with the eventual plan for the site

This lesson takes approximately 30 minutes to complete.
