Chapter 5. Working with Images

Used to be, if you found an image online, you had to read a description of it, download it sight unseen using an FTP program, get offline, and then open the image in a viewing program. Considering how slow processors and modems were in those days, it might have seemed faster to drive across the country to the other person's house with a floppy disk and deliver the image by hand.

Although viewing online images today is mostly headache-free, some Web pages still misuse them at the expense of their visitors' attention and patience. We've all waited for what seems like an hour for a page to load simply because it was overloaded with images that were either way too large, completely extraneous, or both.
