How Assets Work

When you create a local site, Dreamweaver tracks all its files and builds a site cache, or index, of these files. Dreamweaver keeps track of the relative links between files in your local site, as well as minding the locations of all the items described on the previous page.

If the Assets panel is empty

  • On the Assets panel (Figure 2.52), click the Refresh button (Figure 2.53).

Figure 2.52. If your Assets panel is empty, Dream weaver may need to refresh its memory about your site.

Figure 2.53. Click on the Refresh button to make Dreamweaver re-read the site cache.

Dreamweaver will reread the site cache (Figure 2.54) and index your assets. In a moment or two, the Assets panel will display your assets.

Figure 2.54. This dialog box will appear for just a second if you click on Refresh, or for a little longer if you have to rebuild the site cache.

Keep in mind that if you don't have any Flash objects, for example, then the Assets panel can't display them. If you aren't seeing assets that you're expecting to see, check to make sure you're trying to view the right set of items. For instance, if you've accidentally chosen ”Library” but don't have any Library items, the assets pane will be empty.
