Chapter 8. Fonts and Characters > About Special Characters

About Special Characters

HTML is a language based on plain English text (also called ASCII), in which the characters you see on an English-language keyboard are also the standard characters in the HTML language. There are many other characters, however, that you may need or want to use. Because they are not part of the Western Encoding set—that is, you cannot type them with one keystroke—you need to instruct the Web browser to print an escape sequence (see the sidebar Encode and Decode).

An escape sequence is a member of a list of special codes that tell various devices, “Hey! Look up this code and print the character here!”
