Chapter 2. Setting Up Dreamweaver MX > Defining a Local Site and a Testing Serv...

Defining a Local Site and a Testing Server

To use dynamic data (data from a database) in your pages, you need to create a site definition that describes the kind of server you’re using, where you’re keeping your local files, and how you’ll be getting those files to the server. Dreamweaver MX includes a new Basic interface with a wizard that steps you through the site definition in three major panels: Editing Files, Testing Files, and Sharing Files. The Advanced interface lets you access your Site Definition settings directly, and gives you a few additional options (see the Testing Servers and Production Servers sidebar in this chapter for more on those).

Tip

  • If you are not going to be using a database, you do not need to set up a testing server. You should set up a local site—and if your files are going to the Web via FTP with no database involved, put the Web server information in the Remote Info category, not the Testing Server category, of the Site Definition dialog box. For more information, skip to the end of this chapter and read Local Site 411 and Additional Remote Server Setup.
