Master Detail Page Sets

Master detail page sets (what a clunky phrase, no?) organize data so that it’s easier to read and work with. When users search your site, they’re requesting information from your database. You don’t want to make them (or let them) look at all the fields in your database, so you give them a subset.

A master page summarizes the requested records and provides a link to a detail page for each record. For example, someone searching a database of users may look for “Jones.” The search results page that lists the names of all users named Jones is the master page. The master page would then include a link to Fred Jones. Click that link, and you’d get a detail page for Fred Jones that would include not only his name but his department, extension, and photo.
