Chapter 19. Customizing Dreamweaver > The Dreamweaver JavaScript API

The Dreamweaver JavaScript API

The Dreamweaver JavaScript API is extensively documented in the Extending Dreamweaver Help file, but we’ll hit the highlights here.

The API includes a document object model (or DOM) that is very similar to the W3C DOM used by Navigator and Internet Explorer. You can think of the DOM as something like a family tree (albeit a parthenogenetic one—that is, there’s often only one parent). In this model, the DOM functions as the founding member, and several generations, or children, of the family are contained within it. The second generation includes the Forms and Images branches of the family, among others. These children of the DOM are usually called nodes. A third branch would include the attributes of some tags. For example, name and target are two children of the a tag.
