Chapter 1. About Dynamic Content > The Role of the Application Server

The Role of the Application Server

The term application server refers to a Web server that has the ability to run some kind of server-side code.

When you view an ordinary HTML page on a Web server, the server doesn’t interpret what’s in the file. It just sends the file out to your browser, which in turn translates the HTML into an actual page layout. If there’s any JavaScript in the page, your browser handles that as well.
