Setting the Stage

As a way to foster member-run groups that will strengthen your community and support your purpose, encourage your members to put down some roots and participate in community activities before they create their own groups. As your members participate in these activities, they’ll find people who share their interests, and naturally start to coalesce into smaller and more intimate groups.

Meeting Virtual Neighbors

One simple way for members to meet their virtual neighbors is to browse through the public profiles or home pages of people who share their interests. You can promote these connections by making it easy for your members to include communication features like email, guestbooks, and message boards on their profiles or pages, and by encouraging them to publicly announce their interests and affiliations (as discussed in Chapter 3).
