Evolving a Social Identity

Now that we’ve looked at how a community member creates a personal identity, let’s explore how you can strengthen your community by integrating your members’participation history— what they say, do, and contribute—into their public profiles. When you spot someone across the room at a crowded party, you can guess his age, see how she’s dressed, watch his facial expressions, or notice how she’s greeted by the host. In Web communities, these signals are largely unavailable, but you can compensate by offering features that allow your members to create an online persona, as described in the previous section.

Actions Speak Louder Than Words

That’s a great start, but to really add contextual power to your profiles, it’s important to track and display something about each member’s participation history. After all, it’s by actively participating— by talking, playing, building, shopping, selling, teaching, and competing—that your members will build their reputations, and bring their online identities to life.
