Mapping the Territory

Just creating gathering places is not enough: you need a plan for organizing them and integrating them into the rest of your community. Think of your community as a neighborhood and your visitors as people who are considering moving in. How do people pick a neighborhood to live in? They might start by talking to a real estate agent or reading the paper. But they almost always check out the streets and houses, the shops and services, and the other residents before they’re really comfortable that this community is a place that they could call home.

As a community builder, your job is to create a visual design and navigational structure that communicates the purpose, content, and features of your community and helps your visitors find their way around. Because communities are dynamic by nature, this structure must be flexible enough to allow your neighborhood to grow beyond its current boundaries without losing its character.
