Official Leaders

Unofficial leadership is valuable and important; but if your community is growing, eventually you’ll encounter situations that call for trained, empowered leaders. Your may get a surge of naive newcomers, for example, who need handholding and guidance. Your message boards may become overrun with chronic malcontents or self-promoting spammers whose impact needs to be contained. Or you might decide to start running regular events like support groups, interviews, or tournaments that require planning, coordination, and follow-up.

Although enthusiasts often take it upon themselves to greet newcomers or keep a conversation on track, leaders are far more effective when they have training, tools and support. For example, the helpful Simutronics enthusiasts who were greeting newcomers had no special powers, insider knowledge, or guidelines to follow. But once they became official Mentors, they gained “teleportation” powers that allowed them to take newcomers on guided tours of the vast gaming world. They also received training and guidelines, which gave newcomers a more consistent experience.
