Unofficial Leaders

Official leaders are your most visible role models, but anybody who’s active in your community will be seen as a role model and a leader, even if an unofficial one. Newcomers in particular will be influenced by anyone who attracts attention and seems to be important, so it’s up to you to actively highlight the role models you’d like people to follow. Attention is the currency of cyberspace, and by shining a spotlight on certain members, you’ll nudge people’s behavior in that direction.

Spotlight Your Enthusiasts

Enthusiasts are the most active subset of your regulars; they’re excited about what you’re doing and eager to be part of it. While some regulars might be readers or observers, enthusiasts contribute actively by posting thoughtful comments, building useful Web pages, creating artwork or software, or perhaps running a club or guild. By spotlighting these valuable members and their positive contributions, you’re encouraging what you’d like to see more of in your community. If you give them a chance to show off and you express your appreciation for their efforts, you’ll be motivating them to stay involved and keep creating.
