Chapter 7. EVENTS: Meetings, Performance... > Meetings: Bringing Groups Together

Meetings: Bringing Groups Together

It’s the end of another week, and the Net is buzzing with conversation. Over at BabyCenter, the “Balancing Work and Family” chat is just getting underway. On the Heat gaming network, the Friday Afternoon Chat regulars are barraging the community staff with interface suggestions. And in a few hours, the Ultima Online counselors will be meeting in a private IRC channel to discuss a new game patch, while the eBay doll collectors will be gathering at their regular time to discuss the upcoming Barbie convention.

All these events are examples of meetings, which are essentially regularly scheduled chats. Like all events, meetings can add a sense of liveliness to your community, but their true power lies in their ability to create habits and routines, which help people who already know each other maintain their relationships. Work groups, for example, use weekly meetings to disseminate information, raise issues, and solve problems together, while the members of a hobby club might get together monthly to take care of club business.
