Chapter 11. Stylin' with Style Sheets > Kinds of Style Sheets

Kinds of Style Sheets

Style sheets are collections of CSS styles—one or more styles makes a style sheet. In CSS, styles can be stored as a style sheet in one of two ways. On a single page, the styles can be stored internally, in the <head> tag of the document (which comes before the <body>; see Figure 11.11). They can also be stored in an external style sheet (Figure 11.12), which you can link to from many different pages. And external style sheets can be divided into two kinds themselves: linked and imported.

Figure 11.11. The code for an internal style sheet is stored in the <head> of a document. The tag for surrounding style definitions is <style type=”text/css”>.
