ActiveX

Now that Internet Explorer supports plug-ins, not that many people are using ActiveX for the same purpose, although some database applications that run on Microsoft servers still use ActiveX applets (called controls) on active pages in the ASP and ASP.NET formats.

ActiveX is a software architecture developed by Microsoft and introduced with IE3 as its answer to the Java language—answering the cry for cross-platform portability with a proprietary code system. An ActiveX control can act like a plug-in and invisibly play multimedia content, or it can act like Java or JavaScript and serve as a miniature program that runs inside the Internet Explorer Web browser.
