More Physical Text Styles

Physical text styles (other than the ones on the previous page) are demonstrated in Table 8.1. Strikethrough and teletype are supported by Dreamweaver, and you can apply them by using the Text > Style menu. You may want to use teletype for things like blocks of code that will appear on your page.

Bold and Italic vs. Strong and Emphasis

After all that about physical text styles like bold and italic, I need to mention that Dreamweaver MX now by default codes italic text not with the <i> tag but with the <em> tag, meaning emphasis; and it codes bold text not with the <b> tag, but with the <strong> tag, meaning strong emphasis. This is what's called an accessibility feature, so that different kinds of devices such as text-to-speech readers will produce an equivalent presentation, such as tone of voice, in place of typographical emphasis.
