Chapter 4. Editing Code > Using the Code Reference

Using the Code Reference

Dreamweaver offers tag-by-tag help in the form of a context-sensitive Reference panel. If you want to know what a tag does, you can select it and open the Reference to read a description and some basic rules.

The text in the Reference panel comes from O'Reilly textbooks, which are reliable and well-written.

To use the Reference while working:

1.
You must turn on Syntax Coloring in order for the Reference to recognize a tag. In Document window Code view or in the Code inspector, select Syntax Coloring from the View Options menu (Figure 4.25).

2.
Click within your document (any view) on a tag or modified object that you want to learn more about.

3.
Click the Reference button (Figure 4.26). The Reference panel will appear (Figure 4.27), displaying information about the tag you selected.

To browse the Reference:

1.
In the Reference panel, select a topic from the Book drop-down menu. Standard Web topics are HTML, CSS, JavaScript, and Accessibility; dynamic site topics include ASP, JPS, CFML, and SiteSpring.

2.
Select an HTML tag, CSS attribute, or JavaScript object from the drop-down menu on the left.

3.
To read about additional attributes of HTML tags or JavaScript objects, select an attribute from the Description drop-down menu.

Tip

  • You can right-click (Control+click) on any tag and select Reference from the context menu that appears. This material is also available in the Edit Tag dialog box. See Using the Edit Tag Dialog Box for details.
