Exporting as XML

XML stands for eXtensible Markup Language, which basically means you can create your own tags as you see fit for your own back-end scripts and database hooks to interpret. XML tags do not modify the behavior of what they contain in the browser setting. Rather, they're used as containers to mark content. An XML tag may be something like <Headline></Headline>, and the tag may be used as a container into which to import content on dynamic pages; as a marker to export content out of a database; or as a marker for a search robot to find particular types of content.

Because the editable regions of a Dreamweaver template are all named, you may name them the same things as XML tags you're using (or vice versa—name the tags for the regions). You may then export the content of a template-based file as an XML file, with the editable region names converted into XML tags.
