Chapter 17. Automating Dreamweaver > Editing Template Files

Editing Template Files

You can edit template files at any time, even after you've attached pages to them. Once you've edited a template, you can then perform an update to pass your recent edits on to any pages based on them. For example, if you change the background color on your template from orange to blue, you can automatically change the background on all the pages based on that template, too.

When you create a new page based on a template you use the New From Template dialog box (see Figure 17.67), and when you attach a page to a template, you use the Select Template dialog box (Figure 17.86). Both of these dialog boxes have a check box, Update Page When Template Changes. If you deselect this check box, the page will look like the template but will not be included in any updates. (This feature did not work in Dreamweaver 4, but it does now.)
