Chapter 17. Automating Dreamweaver > Creating Pages Based on a Template

Creating Pages Based on a Template

Once you've got your template set up, you can create pages based on that template.

To create a template page:

1.
From the menu bar, select File > New. The New Document dialog box will appear.

2.
Select the Templates tab. In the Templates For list, select the site you're working with, and all available templates will appear. Select the name of the template on which you want to base your page (Figure 17.67).

Figure 17.67. Click on the Templates tab in the New Document dialog box, and then select the name of the site the template is stored in, and the name of the template you wish to use. Notice the dialog box title is now New from Template.

3.
Click Create. The New Document dialog box will close, and a new document window will appear (Figure 17.68), including:

  • The formatting of your template, along with any HTML elements or page properties

  • The editable regions of your template, marked in blue boxes with the name of each region on its tab (Figure 17.69)

Figure 17.69. The editable regions of your template are marked in blue boxes with the name of each region on its tab.

  • Any repeating regions on your template, marked in pale blue boxes.

Figure 17.68. A blank page based on the main.dwt template. The editable regions are marked in blue boxes, and the rest of the text is locked.

Locked regions are not marked but are untouchable. On Windows, this is indicated by a “Don't” sign (Figure 17.70).

Figure 17.70. Can't touch this! Non-editable regions are locked and the cursor tells you so.
