Lesson 4. Elements of Page Design > Importing Data from Spreadsheets

Importing Data from Spreadsheets

If you have text in a spreadsheet or even in a Microsoft Word table, you can insert it into Dreamweaver easily. You need to save or export the text from Microsoft Word as a tab-or comma-delimited file in order to make it compatible with Dreamweaver. You can also use tab-or comma-delimited files that have been exported from other programs such as Microsoft Excel. In this exercise, the text file has already been exported for you.

1.
In the lodging.html document, choose Insert > Table Objects > Import Tabular Data or click the Tabular Data icon on the Common tab of the Insert bar.

The Import Table Data (Macintosh) or Insert Tabular Data (Windows) dialog box opens.

2.
Click Browse and choose lodging_data.txt in the Lesson_04_Tables/Text folder. Then choose Tab from the Delimiter menu. For Table Width, choose Set, type 600 in the text field, and choose Pixels from the drop-down menu. Leave both Cell Padding and Cell Spacing blank. Format Top Row should be set to (No Formatting) by default, and Border should be 1. Click OK.

A table is built for you according to the options you just selected, and the data from the tab-delimited lodging.txt file that you are importing has been inserted into that new table.
