Lesson 14. Restricting Access

Lesson 14. Restricting Access

Like many sites, education-oriented sites can benefit from requiring users to register and to log in before accessing the site's content. One reason to do this is to limit or block access to content so you ensure that only registered (or paying) students gain admittance to your course. If your education content includes large files, such as sound- or video-intensive multimedia, restricting access also helps manage the amount of data that the server (and network) handles.

Restricting access also enables you to track user activity. It lets you correlate a set of data—such as the results of a test or survey—with each person who takes it. This means that you can deliver custom content to a given student (such as her or his test scores).

Building a fully functioning log-in page is easier than you think using Dreamweaver MX server behaviors for ColdFusion.

In this lesson you will create a series of pages that will enable you to restrict access to your pages. These pages include registration, log-in, welcome, log-in failed, and other pages that together create a functioning log-in framework. In addition to achieving its immediate purpose of letting you restrict access to pages, the log-in framework you will build in this lesson lays the foundation for you to track users by their email address as they proceed through the various pages in the restricted areas of the site.

WHAT YOU WILL LEARN

In this lesson, you will:

  • Create an authentication framework

  • Use the four User Authentication server behaviors in Dreamweaver

  • Build a functioning log-in page that compares user credentials with those stored in a database

  • Prevent nonauthenticated users from accessing restricted pages

  • Create a link that enables users to log out

APPROXIMATE TIME

This lesson takes approximately 45 minutes to complete.
