Drawing Blueprints

Creating rich learning media is like any other complex task, such as putting together a presentation or preparing a 90-minute classroom lesson. Rather than starting with the first sentence or screen, you begin by outlining your objectives and overall structure. Throughout this book, I have asked you to look at the final file(s) in action so you have an idea of each lesson's goal. You will do the same thing for this lesson, and you should understand up front that the substance of this lesson is not the what of the learning interaction, but the how that happens behind the scenes—the part that the user never sees.

Admittedly, the appearance of the final product of this lesson may be the least exciting in the book. But its architecture—that is, the way the different pieces work together—is a preface to some of the more powerful techniques discussed in the second half of this book. After this lesson, you will know how to create a powerful and flexible Flash site that gives the user broad power over the content, as well as giving the developer an easy-to-maintain and flexibly-structured framework.
