Lesson 3. Dynamic Learning Interactions

Lesson 3. Dynamic Learning Interactions

Digital interactivity can be big business. Video games for consoles by Sony, Nintendo, and Microsoft routinely have budgets running in the tens of millions of dollars. Some educators have characterized video games as one extreme of digital learning, since a video game is, at its core, an interactive application with a learning curve designed to coincide with the player's skill as it improves over time. Many have suggested that online trainers include video games among their models as they design learning interactions.

But few of us have ten-million-dollar budgets at our disposal. However, as this chapter shows, learning can occur—and even be fun—on a shoestring budget with fairly basic technology. The overall quality is not, then, in the overall budget or in the number of professional animators at your disposal, but in your ability to find ways to create interactivity that enables meaningful interaction with the desired material.

This drop-down menu is one of the branching mechanisms you will deploy in this lesson.

As an interaction type, the branching application is a good example of a simple, yet potentially effective, learning interaction. It can be created with plain, old HTML and simple hyperlinks. Beyond text links, there are other ways to create the branching mechanism, and Dreamweaver makes them easy.

In this lesson, you will use hyperlinks for the first level of branching, but afterward, you will move onto hotspots, or image-based branching, and jump menus, or form-based branching. Along the way, you will create your own CSS style and learn a thing or two about DHTML, which is a good medium for creating Web- based interactivity.

WHAT YOU WILL LEARN

In this lesson, you will:

  • Use Dreamweaver's CSS editor to create a style

  • Create a rollover effect using CSS pseudoclasses

  • Create a client-side image map for branching

  • Create a jump menu for branching

APPROXIMATE TIME
