Lesson 12. Dynamic, Data-Driven Sites > Planning the Web Application

Planning the Web Application

As always, but especially as you develop increasingly complex sites and architectures, it is essential that you have a clear vision of what you are setting out to do. Because this lesson inaugurates a whole section, let's begin with the big picture.

In the real world, you'll start with a scenario—that is, your current situation and a problem needing solving. For these lessons, I imagined that students had completed Unit 6 on Dante. I needed some way to test them, and I also wanted them to have a chance to give me feedback through a unit evaluation survey. I also figured that many of them, after taking the test, would like to look up how they did. Thus, the application would have to enable every student to take the test, survey, and view her or his transcript.
