Chapter 6. Working with Links > Opening Links in a New Window

Opening Links in a New Window

A linked page opens by default in the same browser window as the previous page. If you want your link to open in a separate window, then you have to assign it a target, which is an attribute of the anchor tag that tells the browser in what space it should open the link in question.

The main use of targets is in frames-based sites, which use targets to determine in which frame to open a link. This aspect of targets is thoroughly explained in Chapter 13. However, you may want links to external sites to open in a separate browser window to keep visitors on your site.
