The Nonbreaking Space

In HTML code, although spaces count as characters, they're shady ones. Only one simple spacebar-typed space will display in an HTML browser, even if you type 50 of them. There is an entity, however, called the nonbreaking space. This is part of a family of special characters that you can't type easily with ASCII text; each character is represented by a control code or escape sequence. Of course, you can easily insert these spaces using Dreamweaver. The use of other special characters is described in Chapter 8.

Dreamweaver automatically puts nonbreaking spaces in the code where it guesses you might need them. For instance, when you need more than one line of blank space, you can press Enter (Return) repeatedly, and Dreamweaver inserts multiple paragraph breaks. Since paragraphs won't appear without anything in them, the nonbreaking space is used as an entity to fill the paragraph. Note that you also can't type empty, multiple <p> tags to create multiple paragraph breaks.
