Converting Layers to Tables (and Vice Versa)

As versatile a layout tool as layers are, it's still the case that only version 4 and later browsers display them properly—although the content may be visible in earlier browsers, the positioning and Z-index properties will be ignored, which render the layers useless.

You can, however, export a layer-designed page into table format and then use a browser-detection behavior (see Chapter 16) to send the browser to the layered or non-layered page. You can also use layers to create a mockup for a complex layout and then convert your design into a table-based layout—although the Layout Tables feature of Dreamweaver 4 will do the job, too (see Chapter 12).
